2027: Presidency Challenges Obi to Defend Anambra RecordPeter Obi

As political battle lines deepen ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, the Presidency has turned the spotlight on Peter Obi’s eight-year stewardship of Anambra State, arguing that popularity and a strong social media following should not substitute for a demonstrable record of governance.

Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, launched the criticism while questioning the suitability of Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, to lead Africa’s most populous country.

Rather than focusing solely on Obi’s growing political following, Onanuga argued that the central question ahead of the presidential election should be whether candidates possess the experience, consistency and governance record required to manage Nigeria.

The presidential aide described Obi as “overhyped and overrated” and strongly criticised his performance during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

According to Onanuga, expectations among Obi’s supporters that the former governor could dramatically transform Nigeria if elected President were not sufficiently supported by what he considered Obi’s record in public office.

“Governance is not by magic,” Onanuga said, maintaining that anyone seeking Nigeria’s highest political office should be able to demonstrate a convincing governance pedigree.

The presidential adviser also accused Obi of inconsistency on major national issues, claiming that some of his positions had changed over time.

The latest attack signals that the performance of the major presidential contenders in previous public offices could become an important battleground as campaigns intensify ahead of 2027.

Obi, who governed Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, has repeatedly presented his record in the state and his approach to public finance as evidence of his capacity to manage Nigeria.

His political camp has also argued that competence, character and candidates’ records should be subjected to public scrutiny ahead of the election.

The Presidency’s latest intervention could therefore open another front in the emerging campaign: a direct comparison between Obi’s years in Anambra and President Tinubu’s record both as former Lagos State governor and as Nigeria’s President.

Such comparisons are likely to feature prominently as Nigerians assess competing claims over economic management, infrastructure, education, security, public debt, employment and the cost of living.

The Presidency appears determined to challenge the narrative surrounding Obi’s political appeal by demanding greater scrutiny of what he actually accomplished while occupying executive office.

For Obi and his supporters, however, that challenge could equally provide an opportunity to place his Anambra record before voters and contrast it with the performance of the Tinubu administration.

Obi himself has previously called on Nigerians to examine the records, ideas and character of those seeking the presidency rather than being swayed by political propaganda.

With the 2027 contest gathering momentum, the emerging battle may therefore extend beyond campaign rallies and social media popularity.

Ultimately, Nigerians will have the opportunity to decide whether the records presented by Tinubu, Obi and other presidential candidates provide sufficient evidence of their capacity to tackle the country’s economic, security and developmental challenges.
