Zamfara Security: Troops Kill Over 15 Terrorists in Fierce Gun Battle in Gummi
Troops of the Nigerian military have reportedly killed more than 15 suspected terrorists during a fierce gun battle in Gamo community, Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, as security forces intensify operations against armed groups operating across the state.
The operation, involving troops of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, reportedly followed distress calls over terrorist activities in the community on Monday.
According to reports from the area, the troops responded swiftly and engaged the armed fighters in a prolonged exchange of gunfire after the suspected terrorists resisted efforts by security personnel to dislodge them.
During the confrontation, more than 15 suspected terrorists were reportedly killed, while surviving members of the group were forced to retreat into a nearby forest.
Details surrounding casualties on the side of the security forces remained unclear at the time of the initial report, although there were unconfirmed reports that some security personnel may have been killed during the confrontation.
Attempts to obtain further clarification from the Zamfara State Police Command were reportedly unsuccessful at the time of filing the initial report.
The latest operation comes amid sustained military efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry and kidnapping in Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West.
Communities across Zamfara State have faced years of attacks by armed groups involved in killings, kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling and attacks on rural settlements.
The security situation has also disrupted farming and commercial activities in several communities, forcing some residents to abandon their homes and livelihoods.
Operation Fansan Yamma has intensified military operations across the North-West in an effort to dismantle terrorist camps, disrupt criminal supply networks, rescue kidnapped victims and restore security to affected communities.
The military recently recorded other operations in Zamfara, including the rescue of 33 kidnapped passengers in the Tsafe area after troops engaged their abductors, underscoring the continuing security operations across the state.
Security agencies have repeatedly appealed to residents to provide timely and credible intelligence on the movement and activities of armed groups, maintaining that cooperation between communities and security forces remains critical to combating terrorism and banditry.
The reported Gamo operation represents another confrontation between troops and armed groups as authorities continue efforts to restore security and enable residents of affected Zamfara communities to return to normal economic and social activities.
