The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened applications for its 2026 Startup Awards, offering entrepreneurs in Nigeria and other member states an opportunity to compete for a combined $65,000 in cash prizes alongside mentorship, investment exposure and business acceleration support.
The second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards is designed to identify and support innovative businesses contributing to digital transformation, regional economic integration and sustainable value-chain development across West Africa.
The programme is being convened by the ECOWAS Commission’s Directorate of Private Sector and Industry and will culminate in a major physical event in Abuja from September 28 to 30, 2026.
A total of 60 startups from ECOWAS member states are expected to participate in the programme, which will feature masterclasses, startup clinics, exhibitions, pitch competitions, investor deal rooms and policy discussions.
Under the prize structure, the overall winner will receive $30,000, while the first runner-up will take home $20,000 and the second runner-up will receive $15,000, bringing the total cash prize to $65,000.
Beyond the financial rewards, participating startups will have opportunities to connect with investors, policymakers and other entrepreneurs across West Africa. Selected businesses will also receive mentorship, digital tools and access to a six-month acceleration programme aimed at supporting their growth.
The 2026 competition is open to startups operating in six strategic sectors: Education Technology (EdTech), Financial Technology (FinTech), Health Technology (HealthTech), Agricultural Technology (AgriTech), Clean Technology (CleanTech) and Travel Technology (TravelTech).
Nigerian entrepreneurs interested in participating must meet the competition’s eligibility requirements. Applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS member state and operate a startup registered and based within the region.
Eligible businesses must have been operating for at least two years, have a functional product or service and demonstrate evidence of market traction or potential for scalability.
Applicants are also expected to provide relevant documentation, including identification for the lead founder, a recent passport photograph, business registration documents where applicable, two years of financial statements, management accounts or projections, and a business plan not exceeding 10 pages.
Other requirements include a pitch deck of no more than 10 slides and a one-minute video presentation introducing the startup and its business proposition.
The selection process will take place at national and regional levels. Each ECOWAS member state will nominate some participants, while additional startups will be selected from applications submitted directly by entrepreneurs.
This means Nigerian startups do not necessarily require government nomination before applying for the competition.
Successful applicants will proceed to the regional stage, where finalists will pitch their businesses before an independent jury comprising experts drawn from investment, industry and policy backgrounds.
Applications opened on August 3, 2026, and will close on August 31, 2026.
Virtual masterclasses and startup clinics are scheduled to hold from September 21 to 25, while the physical event, pitch competition, exhibitions and investor engagements will take place in Abuja from September 28 to 30.
The regional finals and final pitch presentations are scheduled for September 30, when the winners of the $65,000 prize pool are expected to emerge.
Nigerian startup founders who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to prepare their business documents, financial information, pitch deck and video presentation before completing their applications through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards application platform.
The initiative provides another opportunity for Nigerian entrepreneurs to access funding, regional visibility, mentorship and potential investors while expanding their businesses beyond the domestic market into the wider West African economy.
