Trump Thanks FIFA After Balogun’s World Cup Red Card Suspension Is Lifted
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly thanked FIFA after the world football governing body suspended the one-match ban imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to feature in the team’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter against Belgium.
Balogun was initially handed an automatic suspension after receiving a red card during the United States’ victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, FIFA later suspended the sanction for a one-year probationary period under its disciplinary rules, making the forward immediately eligible for selection.
Reacting to the development, Trump described FIFA’s decision as the right outcome, saying the football body had corrected what he considered an unfair punishment. The decision was also welcomed by U.S. Soccer ahead of the crucial knockout fixture.
The ruling has, however, generated controversy, with Belgian football officials reportedly expressing dissatisfaction and questioning the basis for reversing the suspension.
Balogun has been one of the standout performers for the United States during the tournament, scoring three goals and playing a key role in the team’s progress to the knockout stage. His availability is expected to provide a major boost as the Americans seek a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
