Tinubu Extends Customs CG Bashir Adeniyi’s Tenure Again to Sustain Reforms and Revenue Growth
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a fresh extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, marking the second time his appointment has been extended within a year.
The latest approval is aimed at enabling the Customs chief to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives considered critical to Nigeria’s trade, revenue generation and border security objectives. The decision underscores the Federal Government’s confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership and the progress recorded under his administration.
Adeniyi, who was initially appointed as Acting Comptroller-General in June 2023 before his confirmation later that year, has overseen several modernization efforts within the Nigeria Customs Service. His administration has focused on improving trade facilitation, boosting revenue collection, strengthening border surveillance and advancing digital transformation within the agency.
Presidential sources indicated that the tenure extension will allow the Customs Service to continue implementing major projects, including the National Single Window initiative, customs modernization programmes and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). These reforms are expected to enhance efficiency in cargo clearance, improve government revenue and promote regional trade integration.
The decision has generated reactions across the maritime and trade sectors, with stakeholders noting that continuity in leadership could help sustain the momentum of ongoing reforms. Supporters argue that Adeniyi’s retention will provide stability as the agency pursues ambitious targets in customs administration and trade facilitation.
The Nigeria Customs Service remains one of the country’s leading revenue-generating agencies, playing a strategic role in supporting economic growth, curbing smuggling and protecting Nigeria’s borders. With the renewed tenure, expectations are high that the agency will further strengthen its operational efficiency and contribution to national development.
