PDP Rift Deepens as Turaki Bloc Aligns with Wike-Backed Leadership, Isolates Makinde
The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new turn as the faction led by former minister Taminu Turaki has declared support for the Wike-backed National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), leaving Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde increasingly isolated.
Turaki announced that his group has chosen the path of reconciliation, urging party members to de-escalate tensions and support ongoing efforts aimed at restoring unity within the party. He emphasized the importance of peace, noting that resolving disputes amicably would strengthen the PDP ahead of future elections.
This move contrasts sharply with Makinde’s recent stance. The governor had openly rejected working with the Wike-backed leadership, insisting he would remain in the PDP but would not align with the current caretaker committee. He also hinted that his loyalists seeking elective positions might contest under an alternative platform.
Despite the disagreement, Turaki expressed optimism that both sides could still reach common ground, revealing that discussions were already underway to end the lingering disputes. He added that his group is willing to make sacrifices, including withdrawing court cases, if it would help restore stability in the party.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, maintained that there is no faction within the PDP, describing the crisis as internal disagreements that can be resolved. He reaffirmed that reconciliation efforts would continue alongside preparations for the party’s national convention.
The latest development signals a possible shift in the balance of power within the PDP, as key stakeholders push for unity while divisions persist over leadership and the party’s future direction.
