ADC Youth Wing Petitions NJC, Demands Investigation and Removal of Justice Lifu
The youth wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC), calling for the removal of Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court over what it described as alleged judicial misconduct and actions capable of undermining public confidence in the judiciary.
In a petition submitted to the NJC, the youth group accused the judge of issuing controversial rulings that have generated concerns among party members and stakeholders. The group argued that some of the judicial decisions attributed to Justice Lifu have raised questions about impartiality and adherence to established legal procedures.
According to the ADC youths, the judiciary remains a critical pillar of democracy and must be protected from actions that could erode public trust. They maintained that judges are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and independence in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The petitioners urged the NJC to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and take appropriate disciplinary measures if any wrongdoing is established. They stressed that accountability within the judicial system is essential for preserving the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The group further noted that Nigerians deserve a judicial system that is transparent, impartial, and free from any perception of bias. They expressed confidence that the NJC would give the petition due consideration and act in accordance with constitutional provisions and judicial ethics.
The development has added another dimension to ongoing debates surrounding judicial accountability and the role of the courts in resolving political and electoral disputes. Legal analysts believe the outcome of the petition could have implications for public perception of judicial independence and confidence in the administration of justice.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Justice Lifu nor the National Judicial Council had publicly responded to the allegations contained in the petition.
