NDC Takes Obi-Kwankwaso Campaign Message to Ilorin in 9km Rally
ILORIN — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken its campaign message for presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the streets of Ilorin as the party steps up mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election.
The mobilisation, described by organisers as a “one million-man march,” covered about nine kilometres across the Kwara State capital on Saturday.
The procession began around Offa Garage before moving through the Post Office, Lower Taiwo Road and Upper Taiwo Road.
The participants later moved through the General Hospital area, Surulere, the Emir’s Palace and Oja Oba.
Several NDC candidates and party supporters participated in the exercise, including the party’s Kwara Central senatorial candidate, Abdulrasheed Sulaiman Omoda, and its Kwara North senatorial candidate, Thomas Audu Gana.
NDC targets grassroots mobilisation
Speaking during the procession, the NDC Chairman in Kwara State, Abdulsalami Abdulganiyu, said the rally was organised to increase the party’s visibility and take its message directly to residents.
He said the party was seeking to build on the support Peter Obi recorded in Kwara during the 2023 presidential election.
According to Abdulganiyu, Obi’s previous performance in the state provides the party with a base from which it can expand its campaign ahead of the 2027 election.
He also expressed confidence in the combination of Obi and Kwankwaso on the NDC presidential ticket.
Obi’s 2023 performance highlighted
Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and recorded 31,166 votes in Kwara State.
A significant proportion of those votes came from the Ilorin metropolitan area.
He received 15,598 votes in Ilorin West and 7,274 votes in Ilorin South, giving him a combined 22,872 votes across the two local government areas.
The NDC is now seeking to build on that previous support while introducing its new political platform to voters across the state.
The party has adopted Obi as its presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 election.
Party highlights economic concerns
The campaign also focused on economic issues affecting residents of Kwara State.
Omoda said economic hardship and poverty were among the issues motivating the party’s campaign activities in the state.
He described the NDC as a platform seeking to address the challenges facing residents and called for greater attention to economic welfare.
Gana, who is contesting for the Kwara North senatorial seat, said the party had been expanding its grassroots structures across the district.
He also spoke about the party’s efforts to engage voters ahead of the election.
NDC continues 2027 preparations
The Ilorin mobilisation forms part of the NDC’s broader preparations for the 2027 general election.
The party has been developing its campaign structures and grassroots networks as it prepares to contest elections across the country.
The procession gave the NDC an opportunity to bring its Obi-Kwankwaso message directly to residents in commercial and residential areas of Ilorin.
With political parties already intensifying their activities ahead of the 2027 polls, the NDC is expected to continue its mobilisation efforts across Kwara and other parts of the country.
