Osun Government Sues EFCC, Demands ₦2 Billion Damages Over Alleged Freeze of State Accounts
The Osun State Government has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), seeking ₦2 billion in damages over the alleged freezing of accounts linked to the state.
The state government contends that the EFCC’s action was unlawful, arbitrary, and unconstitutional, arguing that the restriction has disrupted government operations and hindered the delivery of essential public services.
According to the suit, the Osun Government is asking the court to declare the alleged freezing of the accounts illegal and to order the immediate removal of all restrictions. It also seeks ₦2 billion in damages for the financial losses and administrative challenges it claims to have suffered as a result of the action.
The government maintains that the EFCC exceeded its statutory powers and failed to follow due legal process before imposing the restrictions. It argues that the agency’s actions have negatively affected governance and the implementation of key development programmes in the state.
The case is expected to test the scope of the EFCC’s powers in relation to state government finances, with legal observers closely watching the proceedings as both parties prepare to present their arguments before the court.
