OAU Explains Why Peter Obi’s Lecture Was Cancelled Over Late Notice and Security Concerns
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has clarified the reasons behind its decision to decline a proposed lecture by Peter Obi, citing late notification and security concerns as key factors.
In an official statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution explained that the organisers of the event failed to provide adequate notice and essential details about the programme until less than 24 hours before its scheduled date. The university noted that events involving high-profile personalities require sufficient time for planning, coordination, and engagement with relevant security agencies to ensure safety.
The management further emphasized that the inability to complete necessary logistical and security arrangements led to the refusal to approve the use of its facility for the lecture. It stressed that the decision was not a sign of disrespect toward Peter Obi but was strictly based on adherence to established procedures and the need to safeguard members of the university community and the invited guest.
