Tinubu Urges Media to Scrutinise State, Local Government Activities
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Nigerian media to intensify scrutiny of state governments and local government administrations as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s federal system. The President made the call while hosting leaders of media organisations during an interfaith breaking of the Ramadan and Lenten fast at the State House in Abuja.
Tinubu noted that ongoing reforms have further strengthened federalism in Nigeria and improved the financial capacity of sub-national governments. He explained that local governments now receive their allocations directly, making it necessary for journalists to closely monitor how the funds are utilised to ensure transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery at the grassroots.
The President also acknowledged the critical role the media plays in sustaining democracy and promoting national development. According to him, constructive criticism and responsible reporting help leaders perform better and remain accountable to the people. Tinubu reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to press freedom while engaging global technology companies on issues affecting Nigeria’s media industry.
