Abdulsalami Urges INEC to Remain Neutral Ahead of 2027 General Elections
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain strict neutrality and uphold its constitutional mandate as preparations gather pace for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Abdulsalami stressed that the credibility of the 2027 polls will depend largely on the electoral umpire’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and impartiality throughout the electoral process. He urged INEC to resist all forms of political pressure and ensure that every eligible Nigerian voter has the opportunity to participate in free, fair, and credible elections.
The elder statesman also appealed to political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders to conduct their campaigns peacefully and avoid actions capable of undermining the nation’s democratic process. He noted that credible elections remain essential to sustaining democratic governance, political stability, and national development.
According to him, all institutions involved in the electoral process, including security agencies and election observers, must discharge their responsibilities professionally and in accordance with the law to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
Abdulsalami further encouraged Nigerians to actively participate in the electoral process by obtaining their voter credentials, exercising their civic responsibilities peacefully, and rejecting violence, hate speech, and electoral malpractice before, during, and after the elections.
His remarks come as political parties continue consultations, realignments, and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with increasing attention focused on the role of INEC in delivering a transparent and credible electoral process.
