“Lagos’ Development Success Driven by Progressive Leadership — Temitope Olukoya

By Akin Alade

Hon. Temitope Aminat Olukoya, Councillor representing Ward E, Orile-Agege, Lagos State, has attributed the sustained development and grassroots-oriented governance in Lagos to what she described as the progressive political philosophy that places the welfare of the people at the centre of public service.

Olukoya, who recently celebrated her birthday in grand style with residents and supporters in her constituency, said the occasion was not merely about celebration but another opportunity to connect with the people, appreciate their support and reinforce her commitment to grassroots development.

Speaking during a press interview as part of the birthday activities, the councillor said Lagos has continued to distinguish itself in governance because political office holders at the local, state and federal levels are encouraged to understand that representation must ultimately translate into positive impact on the lives of the people.

According to her, councillors, council chairmen, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, members of the National Assembly and senators representing the state operate within a progressive political tradition that emphasises development, empowerment and giving back to society.

Lagos Development Built on Progressive Leadership — Olukoya

Olukoya explained that the approach to governance across Lagos is not accidental but the product of years of political mentoring and leadership training that encourage elected representatives to prioritise the needs of their constituents.

“The reason Lagos continues to do well in terms of development and giving back to society is because Lagos is a progressive state. We have been trained and educated by our leaders to see the welfare of our people as paramount,” she said.

She added that the philosophy cuts across different parts of the state, with representatives adapting a similar people-focused development model to the peculiar needs of their communities.

“If you go to Apapa, you will see the same commitment. What they are doing there is similar to what we are doing here. We are working with a progressive template that gives room for development while ensuring that the welfare of people at the grassroots remains a priority,” Olukoya stated.

Grassroots Welfare Must Remain Priority

For the Ward E councillor, political representation should extend beyond holding public office to maintaining a close relationship with residents and understanding their everyday challenges.

She maintained that the grassroots remain the foundation of democratic governance because communities experience government most directly through their local representatives.

Olukoya said programmes targeted at empowerment, welfare, community development and support for vulnerable residents could strengthen public confidence in government while ensuring that the benefits of democracy reach ordinary citizens.

Her birthday celebration reflected that philosophy, as members of the community joined family, friends, political associates and supporters to celebrate with the councillor.

Rather than separating the celebration from her responsibilities as an elected representative, Olukoya used the occasion to reiterate her determination to continue identifying with the aspirations and welfare of Ward E residents.

Olukoya Reaffirms Commitment to Orile-Agege Residents

The councillor said her relationship with the people of Ward E remains central to her approach to leadership, stressing that elected representatives must remain accessible and responsive to those who entrusted them with public responsibility.

She noted that Lagos’ development experience demonstrates the importance of continuity in policies, political mentorship and a shared vision among elected officials across different levels of government.

According to her, when representatives work within a development-focused framework while responding to the specific needs of their communities, governance becomes more effective and its impact becomes more visible at the grassroots.

Olukoya expressed appreciation to residents of Ward E, political leaders, colleagues, friends and well-wishers who joined her birthday celebration, describing their presence and goodwill as an encouragement to do more.

She pledged to continue supporting initiatives capable of improving the welfare of residents and contributing to the development of Orile-Agege.

For Olukoya, the responsibility of political leadership remains clear: the people must come first, development must reach the grassroots, and public office must provide opportunities to serve rather than merely occupy a position.
