Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash: Four Die as FRSC Blames Speeding, Fatigue
A combination of excessive speed, dangerous overtaking and driver fatigue has claimed four lives in a fatal road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident, which occurred near the Straight Gate axis of the busy highway, involved a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar and an ash-coloured HOWO truck.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said eight people, all male adults, were involved in the crash. Four died, one sustained injuries, while three others escaped unhurt.
According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, preliminary findings indicated that the Mitsubishi driver was travelling at high speed when he attempted to overtake and crashed into the moving truck.
The agency identified speed violation, wrongful overtaking and fatigue as factors responsible for the accident.
FRSC spokesperson in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi, said rescue officials received information about the crash at about 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene six minutes later.
The injured victim was evacuated to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the remains of the four victims were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The vehicles involved in the accident were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation.
Reacting to the tragedy, Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, warned motorists against speeding and unsafe overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys when fatigue could impair drivers’ concentration and reaction time.
He advised motorists embarking on long-distance journeys to get adequate rest and avoid overtaking unless road conditions make the manoeuvre safe.
The latest tragedy again puts the spotlight on dangerous driving practices along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest interstate highways.
