The Department of State Services on Thursday, reportedly arrested a chieftain of the Labour Party, Doyin Okupe, in Lagos State.
The immediate past Director General of the Labour Party presidential campaign organization was arrested at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State.
The development was confirmed by one of his lawyers, Tolu Babaleye, in a Facebook post on Thursday.
According to Babaleye, Okupe who recently resigned as the Director-General of the campaign council of LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was on his way to London when he was arrested.
“The information reaching me now is that Dr. Doyin Okupe has been arrested at Lagos Airport by the DSS on his way to London. The reason according to the source is that he wax asked to produce evidence that the Federal High Court Abuja has freed him from the case in which he wax convicted and paid fine to the knowledge of the whole world and was allowed to go home.
“When will this harassment stop? Who is after Dr. Doyin Okupe? As at today, the man has no case to answer anywhere, I hereby demand that the DSS should release my Client immediately as ti’s is a violation of his freedom of movement, right to liberty and dignity of human person. This is unfair as the man health is fast failing!”, he wrote.
Also, Femi Salako, a media assistant to Okupe, confirmed the development to newsmen on Thursday morning.
According to him, Okupe was shortly released after his arrest by the DSS, who stated that they were aware that he has been cleared.
It would be recalled that the Labour Party chieftain was on 19th of December, 2022 convicted of breaching the Money Laundering Act by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and was subsequently sentenced to two and a half years in prison or pay a fine of N13 million.
