Ogun Police Arrest Man Over Fake Kidnapping Video, Warn Against Spread of False Security Alerts
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect identified as Johnson Elleh for allegedly producing and circulating a misleading video that falsely claimed kidnappings and bandit attacks were taking place along the Owode-Idiroko corridor of the state.
According to the Command, the viral video triggered immediate security concerns and prompted a thorough investigation to verify the authenticity of the claims. Following extensive intelligence gathering and field assessments, police authorities confirmed that no kidnapping or banditry incidents occurred within the Owode-Idiroko axis or surrounding communities as alleged in the video.
The Command disclosed that detectives successfully identified and apprehended the suspect after discovering that he personally featured in the video. Preliminary investigations revealed that the content was deliberately fabricated and circulated to attract public attention, generate online engagement, and create sensational reactions on social media platforms.
Police investigators stated that the suspect’s actions were capable of causing widespread fear, panic, and anxiety among residents while also undermining public confidence in the state’s security architecture. The misleading information, according to the police, had the potential to disrupt public order and divert security resources from genuine security concerns.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to intentionally creating and disseminating the false security alert for content creation purposes. The Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The Ogun State Police Command strongly condemned the deliberate spread of fake news, misinformation, and unverified security reports, describing such acts as serious threats to public peace and safety. The police warned individuals and groups against creating, sharing, or recirculating false security-related information, emphasizing that offenders would face legal consequences regardless of their status or motive.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to identifying, arresting, investigating, and prosecuting anyone found culpable of spreading misinformation capable of causing public disorder or compromising security operations.
While reassuring residents of their safety, the police emphasized that Ogun State remains peaceful and secure. Citizens were urged to remain calm, continue their lawful activities, and rely only on verified information released through official government and security agency channels.
The Command also encouraged members of the public to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities and providing credible information that could assist law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across the state.
Police authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and preserving law and order while cautioning social media users against exploiting security-related issues for personal gain, publicity, or online engagement.
