Buhari won’t assent to electoral bill if it negates democratic principles – Malami
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami says the amended electoral act must ensured democratic tendencies capable of recognizing the interest of all Nigerians.
Mr Malami said President Muhammadu Buhari has sought his advice on the reworked electoral bill before considering it for passage into law.
He said if he was not satisfied and if the reviewed electoral bill was against the public interest, he would advise the president accordingly.
Malami said this last night while featuring on Channels TV programme, Politics Today, monitored by our correspondent.
“If I am not satisfied, and I am of the opinion that it is against the public interest, the national interest, and against the dictates of the democratic process, I will advise accordingly.
“But then, one thing I can tell you is that we can all be interested in leaving behind a legacy of a lasting democracy that accommodates the interest of Nigerians,” he said.
Speaking on the fate of a former acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, the AGF said the delay in concluding the matter was due to the multiple agencies investigating the matter.
On Hushpuppi and ACP Abba Kyari, he said there were exchanges of correspondence between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Government of Nigeria for extradition and investigation.
“You can’t find someone guilty, but perhaps a reasonable ground for suspicion can establish which would translate to the possibility of prosecution which would lead to conviction, if indeed, one is adjudged guilty by a court of law,” he said.
He said the government cannot rule out the possibility of a political solution to the cases of secessionist agitators, Sunday Igboho, and Nnamdi Kanu.
He reiterated the determination of the government to name the identified suspected terrorism financiers.
