Sowore, ADC Demand Independent Probe Into Mary Habila’s Death
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, alongside the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called for an independent investigation into the death of Mary Habila, a physiotherapist who reportedly died at the residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Sowore urged the authorities to convene a coroner’s inquest, insisting that the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death remain unclear and should be subjected to a transparent and thorough investigation before her burial.
In a statement posted on his verified X account, Sowore argued that all legal and forensic procedures, including an autopsy where required by law, should be completed to establish the true cause of death. He also warned against any attempt to rush the burial process, maintaining that the public deserves clarity on the incident.
The activist further alleged that reports indicating Habila died with blood flowing from her mouth raised questions about the nature of her death. He also referenced previous unresolved allegations involving deaths linked to the minister, calling on investigators to ensure a credible and impartial process. Those allegations have not been independently verified.
Similarly, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) called on Minister David Umahi to step aside while an independent investigation is conducted. In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party said the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death had generated widespread public concern and warranted an inquiry free from political influence.
The party also demanded that investigators conduct a full autopsy and make the findings public, arguing that only an independent and transparent process would restore public confidence in the outcome of the investigation.
The incident has continued to attract national attention, with growing calls from political groups and civil society organisations for a comprehensive probe to establish the facts surrounding Habila’s death.
