Tinubu Defends Judges’ Housing Scheme as Wike Seeks Approval for Owner-Occupier Policy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended the Federal Government’s housing initiative for judicial officers, describing it as a necessary intervention to strengthen the independence, welfare and efficiency of the Nigerian judiciary.
The President made the remarks while addressing concerns over the housing programme, insisting that the initiative is designed to provide decent accommodation for judges and should not be misconstrued as an attempt to influence the judiciary.
Tinubu stressed that improving the welfare of judicial officers remains a priority of his administration, noting that a well-supported judiciary is critical to upholding the rule of law and sustaining Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
He maintained that the housing scheme aligns with the government’s commitment to institutional reforms and better working conditions for public officials.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has sought presidential approval for the implementation of an owner-occupier housing policy for beneficiaries of government residential properties in Abuja.
According to Wike, the proposed policy is aimed at ensuring that government-owned houses allocated under the scheme are occupied by genuine beneficiaries rather than being rented out or converted into commercial assets.
The minister explained that the owner-occupier model would promote accountability, proper maintenance of public housing and more efficient management of government residential estates.
He added that the policy would also help eliminate abuses associated with the existing allocation system while ensuring that deserving public servants benefit directly from the programme.
The proposed owner-occupier policy is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to reform housing administration and improve transparency in the allocation and management of government properties.
If approved, the policy is expected to introduce stricter conditions for ownership and occupancy, ensuring that beneficiaries comply with established guidelines and retain the intended purpose of the housing programme.
The development reflects the Federal Government’s broader commitment to improving public service welfare, strengthening institutional integrity and promoting accountability in the management of national assets.
