Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has emphasized that he remains politically independent and is not obligated to follow every political decision made by his former running mate, Peter Obi.
Speaking during a recent interview, Datti clarified that while he shares a cordial relationship with Obi, their political alliance during the 2023 presidential election was based on a common vision for Nigeria and not a lifelong political arrangement. He stressed that his political future would be determined by his convictions and principles rather than personal loyalty.
The former senator revealed that he agreed to join Obi’s presidential ticket in 2023 partly out of concern for the country’s future and sympathy for Obi’s political situation at the time. According to him, several notable politicians had declined opportunities to align with Obi before he eventually accepted the role of vice-presidential candidate.
Datti noted that many political observers wrongly assumed he would automatically follow Obi into any new political coalition or platform. However, he insisted that he remains an independent political actor capable of making his own decisions.
He stated that while he respects Obi, no individual owns his political career or dictates his political direction. The former lawmaker maintained that his commitment is to Nigeria and the pursuit of good governance rather than to any single political personality.
