ADC, Wike Face Off Over Abuja Convention Venue as Tension Mounts

A political standoff has erupted between the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the venue for the party’s planned national convention in Abuja.
The dispute revolves around access to key public facilities, particularly the Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, both considered prime locations for major political gatherings.
ADC officials claim they duly applied to use the venues but were denied approval, leaving the party in a difficult position just hours before the scheduled event. According to party representatives, several attempts were made to secure the facilities through official channels, but no positive response was received.
The party also alleged that efforts to secure alternative venues, including privately owned event centres, were unsuccessful, with many operators reportedly unwilling to host the convention due to fear of possible government repercussions.
In response, Wike dismissed the allegations, insisting that no formal request was submitted to the appropriate authorities. He emphasized that the use of government-owned facilities requires adherence to laid-down procedures, including proper application and payment through designated agencies.
The minister further clarified that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium is not under the control of the FCT Administration, distancing his office from any decision concerning the facility.
Meanwhile, the situation has been compounded by internal tensions within the ADC, with some party stakeholders raising concerns over alleged external interference involving electoral and judicial institutions.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the venue and the growing controversy, the ADC leadership has maintained that its convention will go ahead in Abuja as scheduled.
The development underscores rising political friction as parties begin to position themselves ahead of upcoming electoral activities.
