2027: Wike Builds PDP-APC Alliance to Boost Tinubu’s Re-election Bid
By Akin Alade
The 2027 presidential election is beginning to reshape political alliances in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, moves to build a cross-party mobilisation network aimed at securing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election. The initiative, which brings together political stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), signals a strategy that places presidential victory above traditional party divisions.
The coalition was unveiled at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Rainbow Coalition in Abuja on Monday, October 12, 2026. The gathering attracted serving and former senators, party chairmen, National Assembly candidates and grassroots political leaders from the FCT’s six area councils. Participants agreed to work towards Tinubu’s re-election, with Wike positioning himself as coordinator of the presidential campaign in the FCT and Rivers State.
The development highlights Wike’s determination to use his political network to build support for Tinubu beyond the boundaries of the ruling APC. By bringing political actors from different parties under a common presidential agenda, the minister is pursuing a strategy that could strengthen grassroots mobilisation and expand the President’s support base ahead of the 2027 general election.
A significant feature of the arrangement is its distinction between presidential politics and other electoral contests. Wike has maintained that his support for Tinubu does not prevent the PDP from fielding candidates for governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections. This position leaves room for political competition at other levels while participants work towards a shared objective in the presidential race.
Making a case for Tinubu’s re-election, Wike pointed to infrastructure projects and institutional reforms in the FCT. He cited road construction and rehabilitation, school renovations, improvements to public facilities, the establishment of the FCT Civil Service Commission and the creation of dedicated secretariats for Women Affairs and Youth Development. He argued that these initiatives provided a basis for seeking continued public support for the President.
The coalition also presents a test of how effectively political agreements among party leaders can translate into votes at polling units. Although the public commitment of PDP and APC stakeholders may provide organisational advantages, the ultimate impact will depend on grassroots engagement, voter response, campaign coordination and the ability of political leaders to sustain cooperation as the election approaches.
With the 2027 election drawing closer, Wike’s Rainbow Coalition is emerging as a significant feature of the FCT’s presidential campaign landscape. Its success will depend on whether the alliance can convert cross-party endorsements into measurable electoral support for Tinubu, while managing the competing interests of politicians who may remain rivals in other contests.
