Showunmi Joins Ogun 2027 Governorship Race, Challenges APC Candidate to Debate
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, signaling the start of what is expected to be an intense political contest in the state.
Showunmi made his declaration in Abeokuta during a stakeholders’ engagement, where he urged opposition parties to unite and build a strong grassroots-driven coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a bold move, he challenged the APC’s consensus candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, to a public debate, stressing that aspirants must present their vision and competence before the people. He cautioned against the imposition of candidates through consensus arrangements without giving room for open democratic competition.
The PDP stalwart also addressed the agitation for Ogun West to produce the next governor, noting that while the demand is legitimate, it must be pursued through a transparent and credible process.
Showunmi further criticized the growing influence of money politics, advocating for issue-based campaigns that focus on governance, development, and the future of Ogun State. He emphasized that the state is at a critical political juncture that requires purposeful leadership and strategic direction.
Reaffirming his ambition, he said his decision to run is driven by a desire to provide practical solutions to governance challenges and reposition Ogun State for sustainable growth. He also called on stakeholders to prioritize grassroots mobilization, insisting that any meaningful political coalition must be people-driven.
The development signals early political realignments ahead of the 2027 governorship election, as opposition figures begin to intensify efforts to challenge the dominance of the APC in Ogun State.
