Policy-Based Campaigns Will Curb Hate Speech, Deepen Democracy – Eferegbo
A community development advocate and Executive Director of the OLEGH Centre for Community Development, Henry Eferegbo, has called on political parties and candidates to embrace policy-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying issue-driven electioneering will reduce hate speech, promote peaceful political engagement and deepen Nigeria’s democracy.
Eferegbo urged political actors to focus their campaigns on practical solutions to the nation’s challenges rather than personal attacks and divisive rhetoric. According to him, campaigns anchored on manifestos, facts and verifiable evidence would encourage informed decision-making by voters and elevate the quality of political discourse.
He stressed that political debates should centre on policies relating to security, economic growth, education, healthcare, energy, industrialisation and climate action. He argued that candidates should present measurable and achievable programmes that enable citizens to assess their capacity to govern instead of relying on inflammatory statements and character assassination.
The development expert also advocated stronger institutional safeguards to guarantee a level playing field during elections. He called for measures that would empower the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to address politically motivated restrictions on campaign activities, ensure equal access to public facilities and improve electoral dispute resolution mechanisms.
Eferegbo further urged political leaders to reject violence, thuggery and hate speech, noting that democracy thrives when political competition is based on ideas, accountability and constructive engagement. He maintained that responsible political communication would strengthen public trust, encourage peaceful elections and contribute to Nigeria’s democratic development.
