Fire Destroys ₦500 Million Property at Federal Mortgage Bank Headquarters in Abuja
Property worth an estimated ₦500 million has been destroyed following a fire outbreak at the headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) in Abuja. However, emergency responders successfully prevented the blaze from spreading, saving assets valued at approximately ₦9.5 billion.
The Federal Fire Service said the incident occurred on Saturday night and was traced to an electrical surge that affected offices on the second floor of the two-storey building. Firefighters responded swiftly to the emergency, with support from the Wuse and Central Bank of Nigeria Fire Stations, alongside the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency and other emergency response agencies.
According to the fire service, the coordinated response brought the inferno under control before it could spread to other parts of the building, significantly reducing the scale of the damage. Preliminary assessment showed that while property worth about ₦500 million was lost, critical assets estimated at ₦9.5 billion were successfully protected.
The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service commended all emergency responders for their professionalism and teamwork, describing their timely intervention as instrumental in containing the fire and minimising losses. The service also advised individuals and organisations to carry out regular inspections and maintenance of electrical installations, noting that electrical faults remain a major cause of fire outbreaks.
Meanwhile, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria confirmed that no injuries were recorded during the incident and disclosed that investigations have commenced to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.
