AFCON 2027: Super Eagles Face Uphill Battle After Guinea-Bissau Defeat
ABUJA — Nigeria’s route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has become considerably more difficult after the Super Eagles suffered a 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second Group L qualifying fixture.
The result leaves Nigeria with three points from two matches after their opening 2–1 comeback victory over Madagascar. Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, moved to six points and strengthened their position in a group where only one non-host team will qualify.
The qualification structure makes the setback particularly significant. Tanzania, one of the three hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda, already has an automatic place at the 2027 tournament. Consequently, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are competing for the single remaining qualification ticket in Group L.
With four matches still to play, the Super Eagles cannot afford another major slip. Their immediate task is to recover points in the remaining fixtures and improve their goal difference while hoping that results elsewhere in the group keep the qualification race open.
Nigeria must also address the defensive problems exposed in Bissau. After conceding three goals without reply, the technical crew will have to find a way to restore defensive organisation while improving the team’s attacking efficiency.
The absence of injured striker Victor Osimhen has also been a factor in Nigeria’s early campaign. CAF had confirmed before the qualifiers that the Napoli striker would miss the opening matches because of injury.
Despite the setback, the Super Eagles still have an opportunity to rebuild their campaign. The remaining fixtures give coach Eric Chelle and his players a chance to respond, although the margin for further dropped points has become narrower.
Nigeria’s next objective should therefore be straightforward: collect maximum points from the remaining games, strengthen the defence and convert opportunities more efficiently.
The Group L standings underline the challenge facing the three-time African champions. Guinea-Bissau now have the early advantage, while Nigeria must produce a strong response in the remaining fixtures if they are to remain in contention for AFCON 2027.
