PDP Faction Linked to Wike Announces Plans for National Conven

A faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to hold a National Convention later in the year as part of efforts to reposition the party amid lingering internal disagreements.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), where members agreed on a timetable for the proposed convention, which is expected to take place in Abuja. The convention is expected to usher in a new National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory party organs.
The move follows a recent judgment of a Federal High Court in Ibadan, which reportedly affirmed the legality of the current leadership arrangement within the party. The court also recognised a caretaker committee as the legitimate authority to oversee the party’s affairs pending the conduct of a fresh and valid national convention, while nullifying outcomes of a previous convention.
As part of preparations, the faction disclosed that congresses at the ward and local government levels would be conducted first, followed by state congresses, ahead of the national convention. Party leaders involved in the process stressed the need for transparency and strict adherence to the PDP constitution.
Supporters of the planned convention described it as a crucial step toward restoring internal order, strengthening party unity, and providing a clear leadership direction for the PDP as it navigates its current challenges.
