Opinion: Hon. Abimbola Bimbo Adekanmbi’s Jummah Prayer Appearance Sparks Debate Over Election-Season Religious Politics
As the 2027 Oyo State governorship race gathers momentum, the recent public participation of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Hon. Abimbola “Bimbo” Adekanmbi, in a Jummah prayer has triggered debate in political circles.
For some critics, the issue is not about whether Hon. Abimbola “Bimbo” Adekanmbi is a Muslim or whether he has the right to worship. Rather, they question the timing of the public display, arguing that voters deserve consistency from those seeking public office.
According to this line of argument, Adekanmbi served as Deputy Chief of Staff for four years and later as Commissioner for Finance for another four years, yet there was little public association between him and organised Muslim community activities. Critics also contend that in the years following his exit from government, such appearances remained uncommon, only becoming prominent as the governorship campaign gained momentum.
This has led some observers to ask whether the recent religious engagement reflects sincere personal conviction or a carefully crafted political strategy aimed at appealing to Muslim voters ahead of the election.
Supporters, however, argue that a politician’s faith is a personal matter and that public attendance at religious gatherings should not automatically be interpreted as political opportunism. They insist that voters should judge candidates primarily on competence, integrity and their plans for Oyo State.
Ultimately, democracy gives the electorate the responsibility of separating symbolism from substance. Whether Hon. Abimbola “Bimbo” Adekanmbi’s public religious engagements are viewed as genuine expressions of faith or as election-season political messaging will be left for Oyo voters to decide at the ballot box.
