Proper Funding for Electronic Engineering Can Accelerate Nigeria’s Economic Growth — Alake
Nigeria could significantly accelerate its economic growth, industrialisation and technological development if adequate funding, sound policies and sustained investment are directed towards electronic engineering and technical education.
This position was reinforced by the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Engr. Dr. Temitope John Alake, who has called for greater government and private-sector investment in electronic engineering, describing the discipline as an important driver of technological innovation and national development.
Alake made the call while delivering the institution’s 27th Professor E.K. Obiakor Lecture Series, where he spoke on the relationship between electronic engineering, skills development and Nigeria’s overall economic progress.
According to him, Nigeria cannot fully exploit the opportunities presented by digitalisation, automation and emerging technologies without deliberate policies capable of connecting academic training with the practical skills required by industries.
The argument is particularly significant at a time when countries across the world are investing heavily in technology, advanced manufacturing, automation, telecommunications, artificial intelligence and other innovation-driven sectors.
For Nigeria, proper investment in electronic engineering could become a major catalyst for industrial growth, employment generation, technological independence, entrepreneurship and increased productivity.
Rather than continuing to depend heavily on imported technologies, equipment and technical expertise, sustained investment in local engineering capacity could enable Nigerian institutions and young professionals to develop home-grown solutions to challenges confronting critical sectors of the economy.
Alake specifically advocated increased government funding for polytechnic education through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), noting that technical education requires properly equipped laboratories, modern equipment and practical facilities to produce graduates who can compete effectively in today’s technology-driven economy.
He also stressed the importance of developing local expertise in areas such as electronics and semiconductor technology, arguing that stronger domestic capacity could reduce dependence on foreign technology while creating employment and supporting industrial expansion.
Electronic Engineering Could Become Nigeria’s New Economic Engine
With the right policy environment, Nigeria’s huge population of young people could become an advantage rather than a challenge. Universities, polytechnics and technical institutions can serve as centres where engineers, innovators and entrepreneurs are equipped to develop solutions capable of addressing problems in power, telecommunications, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, security and healthcare.
The Federal Government has already identified science, technology and innovation as important instruments for economic diversification and industrial transformation, including moves to strengthen research financing and commercialisation.
However, funding alone may not produce the desired transformation without policies that encourage research, private investment, industry-academic collaboration and commercialisation of locally developed technologies.
Alake therefore called for stronger partnerships among educational institutions, industries and policymakers, as well as internships, apprenticeships and curricula designed around contemporary industry requirements.
Nigeria has enormous human resources capable of competing with some of the world’s leading technological economies. What remains critical is creating the environment in which those talents can flourish.
If adequate funding, consistent government policies, modern laboratories, research grants and private-sector investment are properly put in place, electronic engineering could become one of the major pillars for Nigeria’s next phase of economic transformation.
Such investment would not only produce qualified engineers; it could stimulate innovation, create thousands of skilled jobs, encourage technology-based businesses, reduce dependence on imports and ultimately strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
For Nigeria, therefore, investment in electronic engineering should no longer be viewed merely as expenditure on education. It should be treated as a strategic investment in industrialisation, economic independence and sustainable national development.
