The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed as misleading a circulating report alleging the criminalisation of a civil dispute in the Ajuwon area, clarifying that the matter in question was a legitimate case of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
In an official statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi B. BabatseyI, the Command expressed concern over the publication, noting that it contained distorted and incomplete information that misrepresented the true nature of the incident.
According to the Command, the case was initially reported on April 9, 2026, by a relative of the victim, who alleged that a disagreement between a landlord and tenants over electricity issues escalated into a physical altercation. The incident reportedly resulted in injuries and a medical emergency involving the landlord.
The police explained that, in line with standard procedure, all parties involved were lawfully invited for questioning. Statements were obtained, and the situation was carefully assessed as a case involving assault and potential breach of peace—not a civil tenancy dispute as suggested in the report.
Authorities further clarified that the matter was handled professionally at the divisional level. The individuals involved were granted administrative bail in accordance with established legal procedures, while efforts were made to de-escalate tensions and encourage amicable resolution.
The Command revealed that the complainant later submitted a formal letter withdrawing the case, confirming that the dispute had been resolved peacefully by all parties involved.
Addressing allegations of unlawful detention, the police stated unequivocally that no individual was detained outside the provisions of the law. All actions taken, including invitations, investigation, and bail, were conducted within constitutional limits and due process.
The Command also noted that it had earlier provided clarification to a media platform that sought its position on the matter. However, it expressed disappointment that the final publication contained selective interpretation and misrepresentation of facts capable of misleading the public.
Reiterating its position, the Ogun State Police Command emphasized that the case was strictly treated as a criminal complaint involving assault and breach of peace, and not a civil enforcement issue.
The Command warned against the spread of inaccurate narratives, stressing that such misinformation could erode public trust in law enforcement and undermine the integrity of due process.
