Nigeria Immigration Service Repatriates 62 Mali Nationals Amid Ongoing Border Upgrades
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Illela Border Command in Sokoto State has successfully repatriated 62 nationals from the Republic of Mali, following a coordinated operation at the Illela Control Post. The group, comprising 51 males and 11 females, was escorted back to their country through a thorough process involving the NIS headquarters in Abuja.
The repatriation operation, confirmed by the NIS Controller, Mr. Tony Akuneme, took place on Friday evening. A team of eight officers, led by Insp. Mamoud Sadiq, was responsible for the safe transportation of the irregular migrants from Abuja to the Illela border in two buses. The team arrived at the border post at approximately 8:00 pm on Friday.
Upon arrival at Illela, the migrants underwent screening and documentation, overseen by Assistant Controller Adamu Mshelia, who also serves as the Officer in Charge of Anti-Smuggling Unit (ANTISOM). After completing the necessary legal procedures, the Mali nationals were handed over to the Niger Republic Police at the Birnin Konni control post, where they underwent another round of screening and documentation before being officially received by the local police chief.
The NIS also revealed plans to improve infrastructure at the Illela Control Post, as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance border security and migration management. The construction of both mega and mini Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) is underway, as part of NIS Controller-General Kemi Nandap’s commitment to addressing irregular migration across Nigeria.
Akuneme further emphasized the importance of these upgrades, noting that land clearance and the demolition of dilapidated structures have already begun. These efforts align with the broader objective of strengthening the nation’s border security in line with the NIS’s commitment to curbing irregular migration.
Regarding the security situation, Akuneme reassured the public that both the Illela and Tangaza areas remain peaceful, with military and security personnel actively monitoring the region to combat threats from Lakurawa bandits.
This operation is part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to address irregular migration and enhance national security at its borders, with the NIS continuing to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and integrity of the country’s borders.
