New Super Eagles handler : Augustine Eguavoen


The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF on Sunday appointed Augustine Owen Eguavoen, as the new Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles on an interim basis.

Eguavoen who is currently the technical director to the NFF will take charge of the Eagles at forthcoming CAF nation’s cup in Cameroon.

His appointment took immediate effect, said Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications.

Eguavoen replaced Franco-German Gernot Rohr, who had spent 64 months as the Eagles coach, becoming Nigeria’s longest football manager.

He will now take charge of the team as it begins preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Cameroon from Jan. 9 to Feb. 6, 2022.

1. Eguavoen was born 19 August 1965 in Sapele Delta state. His home state is Edo.

2. He attended Edokpolor Grammar School in Benin.

3. He started playing professional football in 1984 with NNPC as a defender at the age of 19. He was paid N120 monthly.

4. His second club was Bendel Insurance in 1985, where his salary was N350.

5. Then he moved to ACB in Lagos for one season 1985-1986.

6.He joined Belgian club Gent in 1986 and played for them till 1990. He was recruited right here in Nigeria.

7. He spent another four years with K.V. Kortrijk, another Belgian club.

8. He played for Nigeria for many years. He was captain of Flying Eagles.

9. He was on-field captain when the Super Eagles lifted the African Cup of Nations for the first time on away ground, in Tunisia in 1994.

10. He was part of what many believe was the golden generation of Nigerian football, when Nigeria qualified for World Cup and played in USA

11.He ended his football playing career in Malta in 2001 with Sliame Wanderers, for which he became a coach player in 2000-2001.

12. He returned to Nigeria to handle Bendel Insurance in 2002.

13. He served as coach of Nigeria’s U-20 in 2002/2003

14.He coached Super Eagles 2005-2007. During his tenure, Nigeria finished in third place at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2006.

15. Eguavoen has rich coaching experience. He coached Black Leopards 2008, Enyimba International 2008-2009, Nigeria (caretaker) 2010.

16. He served as coach of Nigeria U23 2010–2011, Sharks F.C.2012–2013
COD United F.C.2013, Bendel Insurance F.C.2014, Gombe United F.C.2014–2015 and Sunshine Stars 2017.

17. He was NFF technical director until 12 December.
