Eric Chelle Identifies Potential Nigerian Successor for Super Eagles Job

Nigeria may already be witnessing the early stages of a long-term Super Eagles coaching succession plan, with head coach Eric Chelle reportedly identifying Daniel Ogunmodede as a Nigerian tactician capable of eventually taking charge of the senior national team.

Although Chelle’s own future with Nigeria appears secure following moves to retain him on a long-term arrangement, the Franco-Malian tactician is reportedly impressed by Ogunmodede’s development and believes the Nigerian coach possesses the potential to become a future Super Eagles head coach.

The development could prove significant for Nigerian football, where debate has persisted for years over whether the country’s senior national team should be entrusted to indigenous coaches or established foreign managers.

Ogunmodede has worked closely with Chelle as part of the Super Eagles technical crew, giving him valuable exposure to international football, elite players and the demands associated with managing one of Africa’s biggest national teams.

His stock in Nigerian football has also risen considerably following his achievements in the domestic game.

The 46-year-old tactician guided Remo Stars to their historic first Nigeria Premier Football League title in the 2024/2025 season, an achievement that strengthened his reputation as one of the country’s leading young coaches.

He subsequently took over as Technical Adviser of Kano Pillars ahead of the 2026/2027 NPFL campaign, providing another major opportunity to demonstrate his credentials at one of Nigeria’s traditional football powerhouses.

Working alongside Chelle could now prove equally important to his long-term development.

Rather than waiting until another coaching crisis emerges before searching for a replacement, identifying and preparing a Nigerian coach from within the existing national-team structure could offer the Super Eagles greater continuity.

Chelle himself has enjoyed an increasingly influential role within Nigeria’s football rebuilding programme.

After taking charge of the Super Eagles in January 2025, the former Mali coach gradually imposed his tactical philosophy on the team while introducing several new players into the national setup.

Nigeria’s football authorities have subsequently expanded his responsibilities, including giving him oversight of the country’s U-23 national team as part of efforts to create a clearer pathway between emerging talents and the senior Super Eagles.

That broader restructuring makes the reported confidence in Ogunmodede particularly interesting.

For years, Nigerian football has struggled to establish a sustainable succession structure where promising indigenous coaches learn within the national-team system before eventually assuming greater responsibilities.

The Ogunmodede situation could provide an opportunity to change that pattern.

However, being identified as a potential future Super Eagles coach is considerably different from being handed the job.

Managing Nigeria comes with enormous expectations, intense public scrutiny and the responsibility of handling internationally established players competing in some of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Ogunmodede will therefore need to continue developing his tactical knowledge, man-management skills and international experience if he is eventually to make the transition from assistant coach to the country’s top football job.

For now, Chelle remains firmly in charge and Nigeria’s immediate attention is on building a competitive Super Eagles capable of challenging for major honours.

But behind the scenes, a possible succession pathway appears to be emerging.

And if Ogunmodede continues his upward trajectory, Nigeria may not need to look too far when the time eventually comes to appoint the man who succeeds Eric Chelle.
