NAF to Acquire 49 New Aircraft to Boost National Security — Air Chief Abubakar

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) will receive 49 new aircraft over the next two years as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance national security and modernise its operations, according to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.

Speaking at the induction of two newly acquired Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters during the NAF’s 61st anniversary celebration in Abuja on Friday, Abubakar said the acquisitions would significantly boost the NAF’s precision strike, ground attack, and air mobility capabilities.

“The dynamic security landscape of our nation demands an agile, well-equipped, and responsive Air Force capable of rapid deployment across multiple theatres,” he said.

The two Agusta helicopters — the first of 12 ordered units — were formally inducted by President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Breakdown of Expected Aircraft

The 49 incoming aircraft include:

• 10 Agusta 109S Trekker helicopters

• 12 AH-1 Zulu attack helicopters

• 24 M-346 attack and ground attack aircraft

• 3 C-295 medium airlift aircraft

Abubakar highlighted that these new additions would transform the NAF into a modern and resilient force capable of addressing complex national threats like terrorism and insurgency.

Recent Acquisitions & Training

From 2024 to date, NAF has received nine brand-new aircraft, including:

• 4 C-129 attack helicopters

• 3 King Air 360s

• 2 Agusta 109 Trekkers

Abubakar emphasized a focus on mission-oriented force development and training, revealing that 8 pilots and 18 engineers/technicians have already been trained for effective deployment of the new helicopters. Additional personnel are currently undergoing specialised overseas training and will train others upon return.

Research, AI, and Technological Innovation

The Air Chief also noted the NAF’s increasing investment in research and development, pointing to progress in areas such as:

• Artificial intelligence and UAVs

• Small arms and rocket development

• Radar enhancement projects

Noteworthy breakthroughs include:

• Revalidation of Alpha Jet ejection seats

• Retrofitting of 68mm unserviceable rockets

• Development of test kits for pyro cartridge performance

Abubakar expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for his support and assured Nigerians that the NAF would continue to work collaboratively with other security agencies to defend national unity and sovereignty.
