President Tinubu Meets Service Chiefs Amid Renewed Insecurity in Northern Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently holding a crucial security meeting with Nigeria’s military service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police at the State House, Abuja, as the country grapples with escalating violence and instability in key northern states.
The high-level meeting comes on the heels of recent deadly attacks and clashes in Plateau, Benue, and Borno States, where hundreds of lives have been lost in recent weeks, reigniting public concerns over government efforts to curb insecurity.
Present at the meeting are:
- Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa
- Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede
- Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar
- Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla
- Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun
Focus of Discussions
Though official details of the meeting are yet to be released, it is widely expected that the deliberations will centre on the recent resurgence of terrorism, banditry, and intercommunal violence, especially in the North-Central and North-East regions.
The meeting also follows President Tinubu’s approval of the deployment of forest guards across 1,129 forests nationwide — a measure aimed at fortifying rural security and halting the movement of insurgents and criminals.
Security Talks Before International Duty
The urgent security briefing comes just before the President’s scheduled trip to Rome on Saturday, where he will attend the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV, the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, at the Vatican.
Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, earlier confirmed that the President will travel to the Vatican to honour the invitation extended by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, who has close ties to Nigeria dating back to his time at the Apostolic Nunciature in Lagos in the 1980s.
