INEC Tightens Grip on Party Conduct as 2027 Elections Approach with New Guidelines
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled updated guidelines for political parties, signaling a stronger regulatory framework for political activities across the country.
The commission said the revised guidelines are part of ongoing reforms aimed at aligning party operations with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, ensuring full compliance with updated legal standards governing elections.
INEC explained that the comprehensive review of its political party regulations is designed to strengthen oversight, reduce internal party conflicts, and promote transparency in party administration. The initiative is also expected to minimize disputes that often arise before elections.
The process, which involves electoral experts, legal practitioners, and senior INEC officials, focuses on key areas including party financing, internal democracy, accurate membership records, and the promotion of inclusivity within party structures.
The commission added that the new guidelines will introduce clearer standards and performance benchmarks for political parties to improve accountability and encourage better democratic practices ahead of the elections.
INEC further stated that the revised framework will be compiled into a draft document, which will be subjected to consultations with political parties and other stakeholders before final approval and implementation.
