Esther Okoronkwo Responds to Racist Abuse Ahead of Super Falcons’ WAFCON Campaign
Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo has responded defiantly after becoming the target of racist abuse on social media following her comments about the theft of cash belonging to several Nigerian players at their hotel in Morocco ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Okoronkwo had publicly disclosed that she and some of her teammates were victims of a theft at the team’s hotel in Casablanca, alleging that money was stolen from their rooms before Nigeria’s opening match of the continental tournament. Her remarks triggered a wave of offensive and racist comments from some social media users.
Refusing to be distracted by the online attacks, the Super Falcons star delivered a message of resilience and unity, declaring that hatred would not derail her commitment to representing Nigeria. In a post on her social media platform, Okoronkwo wrote: “Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch.”
The theft incident reportedly affected several members of the Nigerian squad, including captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and defender Michelle Alozie. Moroccan authorities have since arrested a suspect who reportedly confessed to the crime, with efforts underway to recover the stolen money and continue legal proceedings.
Despite the off-field controversy, the Super Falcons have shifted their attention to the 2026 WAFCON, where they are chasing a record-extending 11th continental title under head coach Justine Madugu. Nigeria will begin its Group C campaign against Malawi before facing Zambia and Egypt as the team aims to reinforce its status as Africa’s most successful women’s football nation.
