Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, has called on members of the emerging opposition coalition to embrace unity, mutual respect, and constructive engagement as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Dickson made the appeal while receiving former presidential candidate Peter Obi during a political consultation meeting aimed at strengthening cooperation among opposition leaders and stakeholders.
The senator expressed concern over the growing trend of personal attacks, insults, and name-calling among supporters and members of opposition groups, warning that such conduct could undermine efforts to build a credible and united political alternative ahead of the next election cycle.
According to Dickson, political disagreements and differing opinions are natural in a democratic environment, but they should not degenerate into hostility or unnecessary attacks on individuals. He urged coalition members to focus on issues affecting Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric that could weaken the opposition’s collective objective.
The Bayelsa lawmaker emphasized that political leaders seeking national transformation must demonstrate tolerance, maturity, and the ability to accommodate diverse perspectives. He noted that successful coalition-building requires trust, dialogue, and a commitment to shared national goals.
During the meeting, discussions reportedly centered on Nigeria’s political future, democratic governance, economic challenges, national unity, and strategies for strengthening opposition collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections. Both leaders reiterated the importance of peaceful political engagement and issue-based campaigns.
Dickson also stressed the need for opposition leaders and supporters to avoid actions capable of creating unnecessary divisions within the coalition movement. He maintained that Nigerians are more interested in solutions to insecurity, unemployment, inflation, and economic hardship than political infighting.
Political observers believe the meeting signals continued consultations among opposition figures seeking greater cooperation ahead of the 2027 presidential contest. Analysts note that unity among opposition stakeholders could play a significant role in shaping the country’s political landscape in the coming years.
As political realignments continue across the country, Dickson’s appeal for restraint and civility highlights growing efforts to build a broad-based coalition capable of presenting a united front in future electoral contests.
The development comes amid increasing political consultations and strategic engagements among opposition leaders as parties and interest groups begin positioning themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election season.
