Nigerian Navy Arrests Vessel, 12 Crew Members Over Alleged Crude Oil Theft in Akwa Ibom
The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft with the arrest of a vessel and 12 crew members allegedly involved in illegal petroleum activities in Akwa Ibom State.
The arrests were made during a coordinated maritime security operation aimed at curbing crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other forms of economic sabotage in Nigeria’s oil-rich coastal region. Naval personnel intercepted the vessel after receiving intelligence linking it to suspected illegal operations within the country’s territorial waters.
According to the Navy, preliminary investigations indicate that the vessel was allegedly engaged in the unlawful movement of petroleum products without the required authorisation. The 12 crew members onboard were taken into custody for questioning as security agencies commenced a full-scale investigation into the operation and the ownership of the vessel.
The Navy reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain and safeguarding critical national assets, stressing that crude oil theft remains a major threat to the country’s economy and energy sector. It warned individuals and organisations involved in illegal oil bunkering and related crimes to desist or face the full weight of the law.
Authorities disclosed that the suspects will be handed over to the appropriate agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries. The Navy also reaffirmed its resolve to sustain intelligence-driven operations across the Niger Delta and other coastal areas to combat maritime crime and secure Nigeria’s oil infrastructure.
