Atiku Slams Presidency Over Criticism of Catholic Bishops
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Presidency over its reported attack on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), calling for greater respect for religious leaders and constructive engagement on issues affecting the country.
In a statement, Atiku expressed concern over the exchange between the Presidency and the Catholic bishops, arguing that religious leaders have a constitutional right to speak on matters of national importance, including governance, security, the economy and the welfare of Nigerians.
The former presidential candidate maintained that the Church and other faith-based organisations have historically played significant roles in promoting peace, justice, accountability and national unity. He stressed that differing opinions should not be met with hostility but addressed through dialogue and mutual respect.
Atiku urged public officials to embrace constructive criticism as an essential component of democratic governance, noting that citizens and institutions should be free to express their views without fear of intimidation or reprisals. According to him, democratic leadership requires tolerance, transparency and openness to diverse perspectives.
He also called on political leaders to focus on addressing the country’s pressing challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship and rising cost of living, rather than engaging in unnecessary confrontations with religious institutions.
The remarks come amid growing public debate over recent comments by Catholic bishops on the state of the nation and the Federal Government’s response, with stakeholders urging all parties to prioritise national unity and peaceful engagement.
