ADC Chairman Ralph Okey Nwosu Oye Criticises Federal Government Over Costly Foreign Trips
National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Okey Nwosu Oye, has criticised the Federal Government over what he described as excessive and wasteful foreign trips by public officials, saying the practice reflects poor governance and misplaced priorities.
Oye argued that while millions of Nigerians are battling economic hardship, inflation and rising unemployment, government officials continue to embark on frequent overseas trips funded with public resources. He described the trend as shameful and insensitive to the plight of ordinary citizens.
According to him, the huge amounts spent on foreign travel could be redirected toward improving healthcare, education, infrastructure and job creation—sectors he said require urgent government attention.
The ADC chairman maintained that public office holders should demonstrate prudence in managing national resources, especially at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with the rising cost of living. He stressed that leaders must lead by example by reducing unnecessary expenditure and embracing accountability.
Oye further urged the Federal Government to review its travel policy, limit non-essential foreign engagements and channel the savings into programmes capable of delivering tangible benefits to citizens.
He warned that continued extravagant spending by government officials could further erode public confidence in leadership, insisting that Nigerians deserve a government that prioritises their welfare over luxury and excessive official travel.
The opposition leader also called for greater transparency in government spending, urging relevant oversight institutions to ensure accountability in the use of public funds. He said responsible fiscal management remains critical to restoring public trust and driving sustainable national development.
