The succession process for the vacant Awujale of Ijebuland throne has recorded another major development as Professor Fassy Yusuf, Vice Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, filed a N10 billion defamation suit against 11 members of the royal family, adding a fresh legal dimension to the prolonged battle over the revered traditional stool.

The latest development comes amid growing legal and internal disputes within the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, whose responsibility it is to produce the next Awujale following the death of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

What initially began as a traditional succession process has gradually developed into a complex struggle involving family leadership, nomination procedures, allegations and counter-allegations, government intervention and now multiple court actions.

Fresh Legal Battle Over Awujale Succession

Professor Yusuf, a lawyer, media consultant and Associate Professor of Law and Media Ethics, instituted the N10 billion suit over allegations reportedly contained in a disputed fact-finding committee report.

The report allegedly raised questions concerning financial inducement, manipulation of documents, irregularities and due process in relation to developments within the ruling house.

Yusuf has denied the allegations and is asking the court to declare the statements defamatory, order a retraction and public apology, and award him N10 billion in damages.

Beyond the monetary claim, however, the case has wider implications for the ongoing Awujale succession process.

Yusuf is also challenging the authority and legitimacy of the committee that produced the disputed report, arguing that it was not properly constituted under the recognised procedures of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House.

Fusengbuwa Leadership Crisis Deepens

The lawsuit comes against the backdrop of an internal leadership crisis within the royal family.

Some members of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House had earlier announced the removal of key leaders, including Chairman Abdulateef Owoyemi, Deputy Chairman Adedokun Ajidagba and Professor Fassy Yusuf.

The affected leaders rejected the action, while another section of the family reportedly passed a vote of confidence in them.

The development has consequently raised an important question over who possesses the legitimate authority to take binding decisions on behalf of the ruling house at such a sensitive moment in the history of the family.

Awujale Throne Battle Moves Further Into Court

The N10 billion defamation suit is not the only legal action connected with the succession controversy.

The leadership of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House has also approached the court seeking an order compelling the appropriate kingmakers to continue and complete the process of selecting the next Awujale.

The ruling house leadership maintains that it has already fulfilled its responsibility by nominating candidates and forwarding the names for further consideration.

That case is expected to test several important issues, including the legality of the suspension of the process, the powers of the state government and the responsibilities of the kingmakers under the relevant chieftaincy laws and traditions.

Time for Fusengbuwa Family to Get It Right

The latest developments may provide the Fusengbuwa Ruling House with an opportunity to finally resolve the controversies surrounding the succession process.

At this stage, the interest of Ijebuland should remain paramount.

The Awujale institution is bigger than any individual, group or faction within the royal family.

Members of the ruling house therefore have a responsibility to ensure that every step taken in the selection process conforms with the law, established tradition and recognised family procedures.

Where there are allegations of wrongdoing, such claims should be supported with evidence and tested through lawful channels.

Where there are disagreements over authority and procedure, the courts and established traditional institutions should be allowed to provide clarity.

Law and Tradition Must Prevail

The prolonged disagreements surrounding the Awujale throne have shown why strict adherence to law and tradition remains important in royal succession matters.

A process as historic and sensitive as the selection of the next Awujale should not be determined by personal interests, factional rivalries or unverified allegations.

The ongoing legal battles may therefore become instrumental in defining the next phase of the succession process.

Professor Yusuf’s N10 billion suit could help determine whether the disputed committee acted within its authority, while the separate case on the continuation of the succession process could clarify whether the kingmakers should proceed with the nominations already submitted.

Ijebuland Awaits Next Awujale

The people of Ijebuland continue to await the emergence of a new monarch capable of succeeding the highly respected late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The late Awujale occupied the throne for decades and built a reputation that extended far beyond Ijebuland, making the process of choosing his successor one of the most closely watched traditional succession exercises in Nigeria.

The latest court cases have now placed the Awujale throne succession at another critical stage.

For the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, this may be the moment to get it right by allowing truth, due process, established customs and the law to prevail.

The ultimate expectation of Ijebu people remains a peaceful, transparent and credible succession process capable of producing an Awujale who will preserve the dignity, history and enduring legacy of the throne.
