Beyond Traders’ Losses: The Hidden Danger Behind Cheap Sachet Alcohol That Forced NAFDAC Crackdown

By Akin Alade

The ongoing crackdown on sachet alcohol in Ogun State may have brought financial losses to petty traders, but behind the complaints over declining sales lies a much bigger concern: the danger of making strong alcoholic drinks cheap, portable and easily accessible, particularly to young people and other vulnerable consumers.

For years, sachet alcoholic drinks flourished partly because they were affordable. With a relatively small amount of money, consumers who could not afford bottled alcoholic beverages could purchase a sachet from neighbourhood shops, roadside kiosks, motor parks and other retail outlets.

That affordability helped create a thriving market for petty traders, but it is also at the heart of the public-health concerns surrounding the products.

When Cheap Alcohol Becomes a Public-Health Concern

The major concern is not simply that alcohol is being sold. It is the ease with which small sachets can be purchased, carried and concealed.

Unlike larger bottles, sachets can easily fit into pockets and bags. Their relatively low prices can also make them more accessible to young people with limited disposable income.

NAFDAC has defended its restrictions on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small PET bottles below 200ml as a measure aimed at reducing harmful consumption and limiting children’s access to alcohol.

The agency has cited research indicating significant underage access to alcohol through sachets and small containers, strengthening its argument that the issue should be treated as a public-health concern rather than merely a commercial dispute.

The Danger Goes Beyond the Individual Drinker

Harmful alcohol consumption does not necessarily affect only the person drinking.

Excessive consumption can impair judgement, coordination and reaction time. When alcohol abuse intersects with driving, operating machinery, workplace responsibilities or violent behaviour, the consequences can extend to innocent members of society.

This is particularly concerning around motor parks and transport corridors, where unrestricted access to cheap alcohol can potentially create additional risks if abused by drivers or other road users.

There are also concerns about alcohol dependence and the long-term health consequences associated with excessive drinking.

For economically vulnerable households, frequent spending on alcohol—however inexpensive each individual sachet may appear—can also divert scarce resources away from food, education and other essential family needs.

NAFDAC Crackdown Sends Strong Message

NAFDAC’s enforcement campaign, supported in Ogun State by the police, therefore sends a message that affordability should not override public safety.

Officials have been moving through markets, retail outlets, warehouses, motor parks and other locations as enforcement of the restriction intensifies.

While traders have understandably complained about lost income and unsold stock, the debate must also consider the social cost that can arise when highly accessible alcohol is abused.

The question Nigeria must confront is straightforward: Should the economic benefits of selling cheap alcohol outweigh concerns about its accessibility and potential for harmful consumption?

Traders Need Support, But Public Safety Must Come First

Petty traders should not be treated as the villains in this situation. Many simply stocked products that had been part of their businesses for years and depended on the proceeds to support their families.

Authorities should therefore combine enforcement with education and reasonable transition measures that encourage affected traders to move into alternative fast-selling products.

Manufacturers and major distributors should equally bear responsibility for ensuring prohibited products are removed from distribution channels rather than leaving small retailers at the bottom of the chain to absorb the losses.

However, financial hardship should not prevent regulators from acting where genuine public-health risks have been identified.

The real objective should not be to destroy people’s businesses but to protect lives while helping legitimate businesses adapt to new regulations.

Beyond the N100 Sachet

A sachet of alcohol may look harmless because of its small size and cheap price, but the broader consequences of uncontrolled and harmful alcohol consumption can be far more expensive.

The costs can emerge through health problems, addiction, broken families, reduced productivity, accidents and other social consequences.

That is why the current debate should go beyond the immediate losses being recorded by traders in Ogun State.

If the restriction succeeds in making alcohol less accessible to children and discouraging harmful consumption, its benefits could ultimately outweigh the temporary commercial disruption.

The challenge before NAFDAC and other authorities is therefore to enforce the policy fairly, prevent prohibited products from returning through illegal channels and protect small traders from carrying a disproportionate share of the economic burden.

In the final analysis, the real price of cheap alcohol should not be measured only by what a sachet costs at the roadside shop, but by what alcohol abuse can eventually cost individuals, families and society.
