WAFCON 2026: Zambia Coach Hauptle Confident Copper Queens Can Surprise Nigeria
Zambia women’s national team head coach Nora Häuptle has expressed confidence that the Copper Queens have what it takes to upset defending champions Nigeria at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), insisting her side is capable of surprising the Super Falcons.
Häuptle made the remarks ahead of Zambia’s crucial Group C encounter with Nigeria, describing the Super Falcons as one of the strongest teams in African women’s football while maintaining that her players are prepared to rise to the challenge. She said Zambia respects Nigeria’s pedigree but believes every match presents an opportunity to rewrite history.
The Zambian coach noted that her team has continued to develop in recent years through improved performances at continental and global tournaments. According to her, the Copper Queens have gained valuable experience and confidence, placing them in a strong position to compete against Africa’s elite nations.
Despite her optimism, Häuptle stressed that Zambia would not focus solely on Nigeria, pointing out that every team in Group C deserves equal respect. She explained that matches against Egypt and Malawi would be just as important as the clash with the Super Falcons if Zambia hopes to progress deep into the tournament.
Nigeria enters the tournament as the reigning champions and the most successful side in WAFCON history, having won a record 10 continental titles. The Super Falcons are widely regarded as favourites to retain the crown, setting up what promises to be one of the tournament’s most anticipated group-stage fixtures.
