Tinubu’s State Police Initiative Targets Insecurity, Not 2027 Politics – Orji Kalu
Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu’s campaign for the establishment of state police is politically motivated ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that the initiative is driven solely by the need to improve security across Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Kalu said the President’s commitment to state police stems from growing concerns over the country’s security challenges and the urgent need to protect lives and property.
According to the former Abia State governor, Tinubu has consistently maintained that the proposed reform is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture rather than serve any electoral interest. He urged Nigerians to view the initiative as a national security measure designed to address rising cases of banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
Kalu explained that the constitutional process for creating state police is already underway, with the proposed amendment requiring approval from the Houses of Assembly in the 36 states before becoming law.
He added that after the constitutional amendment, the National Assembly would amend the Police Act to establish the legal framework for the operation of state police across the country.
The senator noted that both chambers of the National Assembly have already passed the constitutional amendment bill on state police and transmitted it to the state legislatures for concurrence, describing the move as a significant step toward overhauling Nigeria’s policing system.
Kalu expressed confidence that the establishment of state police would improve intelligence gathering, enhance community policing, and strengthen the country’s overall security framework.
