Group Seeks Investigation of Peter Obi Over Alleged Sedition, Urges Due Process
A civic group has called on relevant law enforcement authorities to investigate the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over allegations it claims could amount to sedition, urging security agencies to act strictly within the provisions of the law.
The group argued that no individual, regardless of political status or public profile, should be exempt from investigation where allegations of breaches of Nigerian laws are raised. It maintained that accountability and respect for the rule of law must apply equally to all citizens.
According to the group’s position, any statements or actions considered capable of undermining public order or violating existing laws should be subjected to due legal scrutiny. It stressed that due process, rather than political sentiment, should guide the actions of security and judicial institutions.
The organisation further maintained that if investigators establish sufficient evidence of any offence after a thorough and impartial inquiry, the appropriate legal procedures should be followed in accordance with Nigeria’s Constitution and other applicable laws. It emphasized that any decision on criminal liability ultimately rests with the courts.
The call comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections, with public comments by leading political figures increasingly attracting national attention and debate. Analysts note that such developments underscore the need for all political actors to exercise restraint while respecting constitutional rights, including freedom of expression within the limits of the law.
Legal experts have consistently maintained that allegations of criminal conduct should be determined through transparent investigations and judicial processes, rather than public opinion or political rivalry. They also stress that every Nigerian is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court.
As political activities gather momentum across the country, stakeholders have urged political leaders, civil society organisations and government institutions to uphold democratic principles, protect civil liberties and ensure that the rule of law remains the guiding standard in addressing disputes and allegations involving public office holders and political actors.
