SERAP Sues INEC Over Alleged N800bn FAAC Diversion for Election Campaigns
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over allegations that about N800 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) was diverted by some state governors to finance election campaigns.
According to SERAP, the legal action seeks to compel INEC to investigate the alleged diversion of public funds and ensure that any individuals or political parties found culpable are held accountable in accordance with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
The organisation argued that funds allocated through FAAC are intended for the delivery of public services and infrastructure projects, stressing that using such resources for political campaigns would constitute a serious abuse of public trust and a violation of electoral regulations.
SERAP maintained that transparency and accountability are essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process, adding that public funds should be managed responsibly and used solely for the benefit of citizens.
The group urged INEC to exercise its constitutional powers by investigating the allegations and taking appropriate action where evidence of financial misconduct is established. It also called for stronger oversight of campaign financing to enhance transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
The lawsuit comes amid increasing calls by civil society organisations for greater accountability in the management of public resources ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers believe the outcome of the case could have significant implications for campaign finance regulation and electoral accountability in Nigeria.
