Tinubu Approves Upgrade of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa to Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, in a major step aimed at strengthening technical education and accelerating the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The newly approved university will specialise in mining, engineering and technology programmes, providing students with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to support innovation, industrialisation and sustainable economic growth. The institution is also expected to become a centre for research and manpower development in the nation’s mining industry.
The approval followed a proposal advocating the conversion of the institution into a specialised university to leverage Nasarawa State’s vast mineral deposits and position Nigeria as a leading hub for mining education and technological advancement.
According to the Federal Government, the upgrade aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to reforming Nigeria’s tertiary education system by establishing specialised institutions capable of producing highly skilled professionals in strategic sectors of the economy. The initiative is also expected to promote research, innovation and value addition in the solid minerals industry.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a significant milestone for technical and higher education in Nigeria. They believe the specialised university will create more opportunities for students, attract research investments and contribute to the country’s economic diversification agenda.
The Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology is expected to play a key role in producing graduates equipped to drive technological innovation, improve mining operations and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global solid minerals industry.
