Ondo Varsity Unions Suspend Strike, Workers to Resume Duties
University-based unions in Ondo State have suspended their indefinite industrial action and directed workers at the affected state-owned institutions to return to work.
The Joint Action Committee of unions in the state-owned tertiary institutions announced the suspension following interventions by the Ondo State Government to address the issues that triggered the strike.
The industrial action had affected academic and administrative activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, and the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.
The unions had embarked on the strike over unresolved issues surrounding the implementation of agreements between the Federal Government and university-based unions, including outstanding financial and welfare-related obligations.
Workers to resume Tuesday
Following progress made during discussions with the state government, the Joint Action Committee directed affected workers to resume their duties on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
The committee said the decision followed interventions aimed at resolving the outstanding matters between the unions and the government.
The industrial action involved members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union and National Association of Academic Technologists.
The unions had demanded the implementation of agreements and provisions affecting salaries, allowances and other welfare issues for university employees in the state.
State government intervenes
The development followed a series of meetings between the Ondo State Government and representatives of university-based unions.
The government had earlier agreed to adopt the pay structure and allowances applicable to federal universities for workers in the state’s institutions, following negotiations over outstanding salary and welfare concerns.
The affected institutions include Adekunle Ajasin University, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology and the University of Medical Sciences.
The Joint Action Committee commended the state government and other stakeholders who contributed to the discussions that led to the suspension of the strike.
However, the committee urged the managements of the affected institutions to address the remaining non-financial aspects of the agreements.
It also called for the outstanding issues to be resolved promptly to prevent another industrial dispute.
With the suspension, academic and administrative activities are expected to resume across the affected institutions from Tuesday.
