2027: Edo Political Tensions Rise as ADC Demands Probe Into APC Chairman’s Alleged Threat
Political tensions in Edo State have intensified ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) called for an investigation into an alleged threatening remark attributed to the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarrett Tenebe.
The controversy followed a video circulating online in which Tenebe was reported to have made remarks referring to the use of firearms against people who opposed the APC’s electoral plans, including its target of securing votes for President Bola Tinubu.
The ADC has rejected the remarks and called on relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the video and determine whether any offence was committed. (The Guardian Nigeria)
ADC shifts focus to voter protection
Rather than responding only with political rhetoric, the opposition party has placed voter participation and protection at the centre of its response.
Speaking at an enlarged party meeting in Ewohimi, Esan South-East Local Government Area, Edo Central, ADC leaders said voters should be able to participate in elections without fear or intimidation.
The meeting also featured the unveiling of the party’s candidates for state and National Assembly positions in Edo Central, as the ADC continues to build its structures ahead of the 2027 elections. (The Guardian Nigeria)
The party’s Edo leadership said its campaign would rely on voters and the electoral process rather than intimidation.
Calls grow for investigation
The controversy has also moved beyond the two political parties.
The ADC Presidential Campaign Council has called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services and the Independent National Electoral Commission to examine the reported statement.
The campaign council argued that comments capable of intimidating voters could undermine confidence in the electoral process if they are not properly addressed.
The request is for an investigation, not a finding of guilt against Tenebe. Establishing the meaning, context and circumstances of the reported comments remains a matter for the appropriate authorities. (The Guardian Nigeria)
APC’s projected Edo votes become political flashpoint
Another issue at the centre of the dispute is the APC’s stated ambition to secure 2.5 million votes for President Tinubu in Edo during the 2027 presidential election.
The figure has become a point of political debate, with the ADC questioning how such a target would be achieved and insisting that voters should determine the outcome through the established electoral process.
The target itself is a political projection and should not be treated as an indication of the eventual election result.
ADC intensifies grassroots mobilisation
The controversy emerged as the ADC was already expanding its political structure across Edo.
At the Ewohimi meeting, the party welcomed defectors from the APC, Peoples Democratic Party and New Democratic Congress while encouraging its ward and local government structures to increase grassroots mobilisation.
The party said its strategy would involve building support at the local level ahead of the elections.
The development illustrates how political parties are already combining campaign messaging with organisational expansion more than a year before the 2027 general elections.
Electoral credibility becomes wider national issue
The dispute in Edo comes amid broader concerns from political actors and civil society figures about the credibility and safety of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
Recent political discussions have included concerns about intimidation, violence, vote buying and the independence of electoral institutions.
At a September forum on electoral credibility, human rights lawyer Femi Falana also called for measures to protect voters and strengthen the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission. (The Guardian Nigeria)
These concerns make the response of political parties and security institutions to inflammatory campaign statements particularly significant as election preparations intensify.
The challenge for Edo’s 2027 contest
The immediate issue for Edo’s political actors is how the state’s increasingly competitive political environment will be managed as campaigns become more active.
For the ADC, the response to the controversy has been to emphasise voter participation and demand an investigation into the reported comments.
For the authorities, any investigation would need to establish the facts surrounding the video and determine whether the remarks breached any applicable law.
For voters, the wider issue is whether political parties can compete through peaceful campaigns and allow citizens to make their choices without intimidation.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, developments in Edo are likely to remain closely watched because the conduct of political actors, the response of security institutions and the ability of voters to participate freely will all form part of the wider debate over electoral credibility.
